Fishergate Music

George Bizet portrait. Bizet's other operas

Fishergate Music has undertaken the publication of Bizet’s Other Operas, with the aim of filling a gap in the accessibility of his music. Les Pêcheurs de Perles and Carmen are much-loved repertory works, but Bizet’s other half-dozen operas are less often heard, partly because access to reliable editions has been limited. We have published them in newly edited full scores, based on a careful reading of the sources, with vocal scores and orchestral material available on hire.

The series of five volumes contains the following operas:
1          Djamileh, opéra-comique in one act.
2          Don Procopio, opera buffa in two acts.
3          La Jolie Fille de Perth, opera in four acts.
4          La Maison du Docteur, opéra-comique in one act.
Le Dr Miracle, opéra-comique in one act.
5          Ivan IV, opera in five acts.

The editor of these volumes is a well known scholar in the field of French music, having been General Editor of the 26-volume New Berlioz Edition (Bärenreiter), completed in 2006, and editor of several volumes in Bärenreiter’s series L’Opéra Français. He created the online Bizet Catalogue in 2014, and his study of Saint-Saëns’s operas Saint-Saëns and the Stage appeared in 2019.

Fishergate Music also publishes all Bizet’s works for chorus, ranging from student compositions to solemn pieces on sacred texts, from the brief Ecce Sacerdos to the half-hour ode-symphonie Vasco de Gama. These works are all freshly edited from original sources and now available for purchase in a complete volume or as separate works in full score and vocal score. Each work is also available for hire as piano-vocal score, orchestral score, and orchestral parts.

Many of these have recently been recorded for the first time in Volume 6 of the Bru Zane series “Portraits”, devoted to Georges Bizet.

“At last these lovely scores are being made available to us all! The composer of Carmen deserves nothing less!”

Sir Mark Elder, Music Director, the Hallé Orchestra

“No one has done more for the recognition, editing and analysis of French opera, especially Berlioz, than Hugh Macdonald. And now his recent work into another French great is rectifying years of neglect and scandalous editing.”

John Nelson: Honorary Music Director, Orchestre de chambre de Paris
